Eyeful at the Eiffel Tower by Nati

Lucy and I each got to choose a place to go on our big trip, and I chose the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, and it is named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built it. He also helped build the Statue of Liberty. The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World’s Fair. When it was built, Parisians did not like it. One famous author, Guy de Maupassant, hated the tower, but he frequently ate lunch there because if he ate anywhere else, he would see the ugly metal skeleton. For over forty years, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world until the Chrysler building in New York took over.

Because of the UEFA 2016 (European soccer tournament), there was a gigantic soccer ball hanging from the second floor.  I think it would look better without it.

We ate at the first floor of the tower. There are two restaurants. Then we went down to get a guide. At the meeting place, we ran into the Pombo family from school. Then the guide took us to the second floor and gave us the tickets to the top. From the top we could see the smaller Statue of Liberty that the U.S. gave to France, the Arc de Triomphe, two Ferris wheels, les Invalides (which has Napoleon’s tomb), the soccer stadium, Notre Dame, Sacré Cœur and much more.  We also saw the free fan zone where the soccer tournament is played on a giant screen (the largest in the world).

At 10 PM we rode a boat along the Seine River to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle.

I thought that it was going to be bigger.  I am glad we went.

Just under one month to go…

We have new favorite photos, and Todd has a sign about the consequences of not cleaning up after your dog in Paris.  You can also see Marie Antoinette’s toilet.

  1. Great post, Natalie! I learn something new every time I read your fantastic notes!

It must be an exciting time to be in Paris with the big football game going on.

Something else I learned today… do you know what a group of cats is called? Well, many things but my favorite is: a glaring. A glaring of cats. And a group of kittens? A litter, of course, but my favorite is… an intrigue. An intrigue of kittens sat by a glaring of cats.

  2. Love your berets! You look very Parisian! Did you walk up all the stairs or take the gigantic yellow elevators? Uncle Caleb wanted to take the stairs but we ended up on the elevators (thank goodness!).
